Grants for Restoring Old Buildings

Have you been interested to learn about the availability of grants for restoring old buildings in Ireland? It is important to keep these historic structures intact as it helps to preserve Irish culture. That is why AD Services offer building restoration services in Cork. These projects can require months to complete, and, in some cases, they may be quite expensive. Good thing there are grants available.

But who qualifies for this type of financial aid? The team at AD Services have put together this informative guide to help you figure out if you do. Let us take a closer look at some regulations.

The Types of Grants for Restoring Old Buildings

There are a couple of grants available. We will look at each of the three individually and that way you will be able to tell if it applies to you, how much is available and how to go about getting it. Let us examine the grants for restoring old buildings and what is involved.

1. The Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS)

The Built Heritage Investment Scheme applies to structures that are already protected through the Planning and Development Act. The primary goal is to assist those who are undertaking small-to-medium-sized projects. Thus, it may be possible to apply for between €2,500 and €15,000. Note that this amount of funding has increased by 33 per cent when compared to figures at the beginning of 2021. Individuals can apply for this scheme until 11 February 2022 (a new application window will thereafter be presented).

It will first be necessary to apply for this grant by consulting with your local authorities. Of course, you will also need to provide information regarding the type of structure as well as the work that you intend to carry out. To learn more about this option, please have a closer look at this official brochure.

2. The Historic Structures Fund (HSF)

These grants for restoring old buildings apply to both public and private structures. The Historic Structures Fund was developed to preserve and enhance the cultural heritage of old buildings so that the community can benefit. Those who apply may be able to access between €15,000 and €200,000. Note that between €15,000 and €50,000 are available under the “Stream 1” scheme and up to €200,000 may be possible under the “Stream 2” protocol. Simply stated, you have two primary options.

2.1 Vernacular Structures

Vernacular architecture is associated with buildings that have been constructed using local or regional materials. Therefore, these structures tend to boast a rich community heritage. Also, these buildings may or may not have been professionally designed (particularly when dealing with extremely old properties). These structures can often provide a unique glimpse into the past and therefore, authorities are keen to have them professionally preserved.

2.2 Historic Shopfronts

This next stream is meant to provide a financial incentive for those who wish to preserve the historical significance of shopfronts and store facades. Some types of restoration that may be pertinent can include:

  • Windows
  • Signage
  • Entrances
  • Smaller architectural details (such as eaves or exterior mouldings)

Once again, both schemes are provided by your local authorities. It’s advisable to speak with a recognised official or to contact a relevant Architectural Conservation Officer.

3. The GLAS Traditional Farm Buildings Grants Scheme

The Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme is associated with restoring old buildings that serve (or have served) agricultural purposes in the past. These structures must also be associated with a significant amount of cultural heritage. The programme is available to anyone who is currently participating in the Green Low-Carbon Agriculture Environment (GLAS) programme.

At the time that this article was written, the government has been supplied with €1.5 million in funds which are allocated directly to the GLAS scheme. Please note that between €4,000 and €25,000 may be obtained per grant. Furthermore, up to 75 per cent of an entire restoration project may be covered (with the limit currently capped at €25,000).

You would need to look at the qualification criteria to better understand if these grants for restoring old buildings are relevant to your situation. Additional details, as well as the terms and conditions, can be found by navigating to the official website of the Heritage Council.
